Hi everyone,
(Below I’m including a Latvian translation of this message, created using DeepL.)
First of all, a big thank you for your contributions in our open MapRoulette challenges for fixing inconsistent building and highway intersections, and correcting inconsistent bridge and tunnel tagging. We really appreciate your help!
My team at TomTom now identified a number of highways in Latvia that are in our TomTom map but not yet in OpenStreetMap. After manually verifying the presence of these ways on the available imagery sources, we created a new MapRoulette challenge to help add them to OSM. The challenge contains 31 tasks and you can find it here: Latvia - Add Highways.
Our editing team will take up this challenge in a couple of weeks or so, and of course other community members are very welcome to try it out as well. If a way shouldn’t be added to the map, you can mark the task as “Not an issue”.
Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any comments or questions.
Have a great week!
Marjan
Sveiki visiem,
Marjan
Thanks for your contributions everyone! Glad to see the challenge is helpful.
i-ky has marked this topic as unresolved.
For those of you who are interested--we have validated all of the data that we have for Riga. 300 missing highways that we identified and considered useful leads have been added to this challenge, and about 350 others have not been added yet.
Thanks, looks great - seems to be mostly serviceways (like supermarket deliveries, parking aisles) this time.
@Rihards Olups that's right, we're mostly finding lower-class roads, useful for use cases like last-mile delivery.
Thanks, any information on data sources, methodology?
Asking as I spotted some that look like private driveways, about 5m long, that got me curious. Does that indicate that the owner uses TomTom solutions?
Hi Rihards, the road network in our map is captured by our editors based on different types of sources, including content from providers, aerial imagery, GPS traces. Hope this helps  have a nice weekend
One example is what might be a private driveway, max 15m long - but hard to map as the imagery is of the building during in a construction phase. Missing road marker where the selected node is. In this case, it might be useful to know what the exact TomTom source was.
missing driveway?
@Rihards Olups I don't know what the source for this particular case is, but if it's not possible to confirm the current existence of the way based on the available sources the right thing to do would be to mark the task as "too hard". We'll try to exclude cases like this in the future.
Thanks, it might be OK to include such cases for now - if nobody gets a chance to survey it for a while, indeed we can drop it as "too hard".
Our editors completed the remaining task in this challenge last week. We may add more tasks at a later point in time, but I'm fine with closing this topic for now and reopening it again later if that makes more sense for users of this stream.
Thanks again to everyone who helped out with this challenge!
This is really great, please pass thank you to the editing team.
Looks like they also decided to skip the short/unclear serviceway at https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/56.85915/24.29721&layers=N .
Any feeback from them regarding existing data or anything else in Latvia?
Thanks @Rihards Olups, I will!
Meanwhile we've added some new tasks to the challenge so I'm keeping this topic open.
Re: "Any feedback from them regarding existing data or anything else in Latvia?", what kind of data are you referring to specifically?
Sorry for the delay in my response, I was enjoying some time off(line) last week
Thanks, sounds great.
Regarding feedback, was wondering whether they have observed anything specific - more or less detail than in other countries, some data categories that stand out, data sources...
It seems like a potentially great way to get valuable feedback for the wider community, and engage with TomTom.
@Rihards Olups good question, let me check with my team and get back to you.
@Rihards Olups looking at the number of road network issues we're identifying in Latvia, the quality of the data is quite high. Of course, if anyone has encountered other types of issues in the data that we haven't touched upon, they're free to let us know so we can investigate if we can look into these. Note that our focus is on improving features that impact routing, so I can't make statements about all data categories.
