Pabeigts kārtējais "not great, not terrible" projekts Rīgā.

![]()
Tā pat pie Maksimas. Uzkrāsotas zebras, bet cilvēkie iet pāri visur. Jau tā šeit ejot jāskatās uz mašīnām, tad tagad vēl pa visu platumu pāri veloceļam. Nevaru ticēt, ka tas tiešām vienīgais variants kā šo izveidot.
![]()
Šitas populārais celiņš, no kura visi iet un brauc kaut kādā veidā palicis bez zebras un bez nekā. CIlvēki iet pāri neskatoties. Ne vienas veloceļa zīmes nav, ne vienas līnijas, pat ne asfalta izmaiņas. Vispār visā garumā tas veloceļš tāds - tikai visu laiku skaties, ka tev uz sāniem kāds izskrien uz kāda no 50 savienojumiem.

Kā piemērs galīgi tizlām trajektorijām šitais pāreju laukums. Vai tiešām nevarēja nedaudz pabīdīt celiņus, lai tie nav pa diogonālēm un izveidot normālas īsas pārejas, nevis šito "katrs, kur grib".
![]()

Same place after storm
(source here)
Also very curious to see if it will end up temporary. Hope so, but hopes are low.
Same construction near https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/669397068 seems to be a permanent fixture by now for two years, I think.
Mmm, I imagined it's something like that. But of course it's placed on the cycleway. Out of all locations, the one where there is the most dangerous traffic. In one of the most narrow poorly-visible locations next to a transit platform!
I mean, honestly, why didn't they just move the damn platform south to begin with. Or just have the cycleway go around this whole location along west roads - no one wants to cycle past this place anyway.
It's placed on the cycleway, because it's the only place they could put it, without dismantling bench or cutting tree the fell. And also because nobody cared to think.
Re alt route - I suspect either lack of creative thinking, or some form of compromise.
Maybe they wanted to renew sidewalks where platform is + replace ped crossing over nicgales, and it was easier to push through as a single project.
Or maybe, strategy for bicycle network Riga 2030 had path here (because it was drawn in paint without actual forethought) and changing it in project was too much to actually do :man_shrugging:
Well, yeah, every step of the way it's blatant incompetency. And it says something that this is actually one of the best projects.
We were discussing this "missing detour" and I think I found one more explanation:

notice a whole mess of ownership of land around that road. City, then college, then private ownership, then again city (but sidewalk - college), and finally - commercial ownership.
The same is true for Maxima and around though.
Bluntly put, it's all bureaucratic bull:poop:
I don't know what orange line on kadastr mean, but territory of parcel along the road there assigned to city
And the same is probably a reason why they didn't extent cycleway to the field in front of Kepka, even though it seemed quite obvious and natural thing to do.
Orange is a "part of parcel" if I'm not mistaken
Well, yeah, I understand that there are land ownership and such things here and they are routing this through municipality owned stuff unless they can't. But that's just a "well, can't do anything about this, let's build a shitty solution" attitude. There are legal processes to adjust parcels, have servitude locations, etc. It's just that no one at any point cares enough to say "hold on, this actually sucks".
Yeah, I'm not saying they couldn't do it.
Just that there is another potential explanation/cause.
Changes in land ownership are painfully slow, forced ones even more so.
Don't know how "servitude locations" work in Latvia, but I doubt everything roses there. Because almost everywhere it seems to be a struggle.
I'm not saying there isn't an explanation. I'm saying that the reason the end result sucks is because a whole bunch of people went "aww, it's too difficult" instead of doing things properly. Now we are stuck with these crap solutions everywhere. And there is no recourse to fix any of it.
The whole thing is based on a premise of "how do we fit this into here using only our land and with minimal changes" instead of "how do we make the best solution". There isn't even a compromise. It's always the former.
